What is an airway clearance system? 

The Airway Clearance System is a unique therapy system designed to help mobilise pulmonary secretions through high frequency chest wall oscillation. The Vest system consists of an inflatable vest connected by tubes to an air pulse generator. The generator rapidly inflates and deflates the vest, compressing and releasing the chest wall. This technology is called high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO). The rapid chest movement mimics ‘mini-coughs’ that dislodge and thin the mucus, moving it along to the central airways. The Vest therapy treats all lobes of the lungs simultaneously and is technique independent. It can be beneficial to patients across the continuum of care, including acute and post-acute facilities, as well as in the home.

2.How does it work?

The Airway Clearance System uses HFCWO technology to help clear patients’ airways. It dislodges mucus from the bronchial walls, and helps move secretions and mucus from smaller to larger airways, where it can be coughed or suctioned out.

3. How does High frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO)  work?

High-frequency chest wall oscillation involves an inflatable vest that is attached to a machine. The machine mechanically performs chest physical therapy by vibrating at a high frequency. The vest vibrates the chest to loosen and thin mucus. Every five minutes, the person stops the machine and coughs or huffs.
